Local women have accused Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Shaikh and his supporters of forcefully grabbing land and sexual harassment. Now local people are also attacking Trinamool leaders. Ajit Maiti gave statement after beating
After the attack by the local people, TMC leader Ajit Maiti said that I was attacked because I am a TMC leader. My bike was vandalized and they also attacked my wife. My daughter has exams but she is scared that we will be attacked again. They also set fire to one of my storage rooms (sawmills). They were making false allegations about me. Let the investigation be done and if I am guilty, the police can arrest me.
Shahjahan burnt Sheikh’s brother’s property
On Friday, the mob also vandalized the houses of local Trinamool Congress leaders in Sandeshkhali. Protesters armed with sticks set fire to a thatched structure near a fishing yard in the area. It is being told that this yard belonged to Shahjahan Sheikh’s brother Siraj. The protesters said the police did nothing for years. That is why we are doing everything to get back our land and respect.
Human Rights Commission releases statement of victims
The National Human Rights Commission team visited some areas of Sandeshkhali and talked to the villagers and recorded their statements. The NHRC team reached Sandeshkhali via Dhamakhali boat ghat after crossing the Kalagachi river by boat. The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that poor women were harassed and sexually harassed at Sandeshkhali.
NHRC seeks report from DGP within 4 weeks
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of West Bengal and asked them to submit a report within four weeks on the violence in Sandeshkhali.
