UPI may start soon in these countries:
India’s neighboring country Nepal may soon become a country to use UPI services. In December 2023, Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava said that the digital payment gateway between India and Nepal could be launched by February 2024.
An agreement for this was signed between NPCI and Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL) during the visit of the Nepalese Prime Minister to India last year. It is noteworthy that in January last year, NPCI had announced the extension of UPI for NRIs using international mobile phone numbers from 10 select countries
Apart from this, many European countries can also start this facility soon. It can also be launched soon in countries like Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Australia, USA, Bahrain, Japan, and the Philippines.
How does UPI work?
NPCI launched UPI services in the year 2016. UPI system is a mobile application-based system which provides the facility of payment from bank accounts. It is governed by RBI and IBA (Indian Banks Association).
It became popular on a large scale in India during the Covid pandemic. With more than 380 million users, UPI had recorded 74 billion transactions amounting to $1.53 trillion in 2022. PhonePe is at the forefront in terms of UPI transactions, followed by Google Pay and Paytm respectively.
