How does ultra-edge technology work?

Actually, there is a system of stump mics behind the batsman and cameras are installed around the stadium which monitor the ball and the sound emitted from it. When hit by the bat, the ball produces a special sound which is picked up by the wicket and detected on the tracking screen. In such a situation, if the ball touches the bat slightly, then it is known and the decision to give out or not is taken.

The mics in the stump are able to differentiate between the sound emitted from the bat, pad and body based on the frequency level. As the ball approaches the bat, cameras on either side of the batsman at the opposite end of the field track the ball for photographic representation. The sound microphone then picks up the sound based on motion and sends it to the oscilloscope. This oscilloscope shows the sound frequency level in waves. The combination of camera and stump mic helps the umpires decide that the ball is not.
