Dushman Movie is a 1972 Hindi language film. It was directed by Dulal Guha and produced by Premji. It is based on a novel by Virendra Sinha. Rajesh Khanna played the title role in the film and it earned him a Filmfare nomination for Best Actor, his only nomination for the film. Meena Kumari, Mumtaz, Rehman, Asit Sen and Leela Mishra are the other actors. Dushman Movie was included in the highest grossing films of the year 1972
Dusman Movie Story
Surjeet Singh (Rajesh Khanna) earns his living by driving trucks. He is in a hurry and often drinks and drives. One night he stays with the prostitute Chamelibai (Bindu), spends the night with her and wakes up late the next morning. He gets out and drives the truck at high speed in the dense fog. He kills a farmer named Ram Deen. But despite the opportunity to escape, he decides to face the consequences. He is arrested by the police and presented in the court.
Surjeet confesses his crime to the judge (Rahman), who in turn learns that he should send Surjeet to jail for two years. But seeing the plight of Ram Deen’s family reveals his underlying belief that imprisonment is not good for either the victim or the criminal.The judge sends Surjeet to live with Ram Deen’s family and meet their financial needs.
Surjeet is transported to his new “prison” under police escort, where he is met by hostile villagers. Ram Din’s family hate his presence and call him “the enemy”. Surjeet attempts to escape on the first night, but is caught.
He gradually accepts this turn of fate that he has to live under the unforgiving eyes of Ram Din’s family. With time, he starts working sincerely for the family and its interests. He meets Phoolmati (Mumtaz)
They start liking each other immediately. He is able to make friends even among the previously hostile villagers. He saves the family land from the clutches of the local landlord and works hard.
Overcoming many obstacles, Surjeet is able to get Kamala married to her childhood sweetheart. With the help of the generous police and the judge, he succeeds in thwarting several attempts of the landlord to confiscate the family’s land. He is also able to help other villagers who had mortgaged their land with the same landlord. However, Malti (Meena Kumari) is unable to forgive Surjeet for killing her husband.
Things take a turn for the worse when Surjeet is arrested for his grandfather’s accidental death under the influence of phulmati.
At the same time, the landlord sets fire to the crop produced by Surjeet and other villagers and kidnaps Phoolmati.
Malti, who was working at the landlord’s house, witnesses his misdeeds and eventually realizes her mistake. She is able to save Phoolmati, but is captured by the landlord. Meanwhile, Surjeet escapes and rescues Malti with the help of Phoolmati. The police arrests the landlord.
Ram Deen’s family finally accepts Surjeet as one of their own and he is married to Phoolmati. In a final twist, however, after his two years of imprisonment are up, the police arrive to take him back to the city. He pleads with the judge to sentence him to life imprisonment and the judge smiles that his experiment has been successful.
